Become a PROGRAM SPONSOR and keep a CHILD SAFE and SHELTERED.

Program sponsors support one of three unique crisis programs which bring shelter and safety to women, children and low-income individuals. These core programs are SAFE, C.A.P.P. and HOME. Program sponsors impact our community by reducing violence, improving the quality of housing, and protecting children from abuse and neglect. Here is a brief description of each program and just a few of the things your program sponsorship will do for those in need.

SAFE – Safe at Home Project

Read Client Story

SAFE prevents domestic violence by assisting battered women and their children to obtain protective orders from the court. These protective orders help victims secure their homes and protect their children from the batterer. This remedy can also give a victim access to money (child support) to buy food and necessities, access to health coverage through the batterer and even possession of a family vehicle to get children to school/work.

SAFE services are unique in this county. Unlike other social services, SAFE offers victims permanent solutions to safety, shelter and economic issues. An uncontroverted national domestic violence study concluded that legal services programs like SAFE are the ONLY social services that prevent domestic violence because they provide victims with permanent solutions to end the violence. SAFE serves over 600 women and 1,000 children annually.

C.A.P.P – Child Abuse Prevention Project

Read Client Story

C.A.P.P. Protects abused and neglected children by helping them stabilize in loving homes with non-parental caregivers. C.A.P.P. helps caregivers obtain guardianships which give them the legal right to house the child, limit contact with an abusive parent, make legal decisions for the at risk child and obtain certain benefits on their behalf. Children assisted by Legal Aid's Child Abuse Prevention Project in 2007 escaped physical and emotional abuse, homelessness, parental abandonment, truancy, lack of medical care and exposure to drugs.

There are no other C.A.P.P. services in Sonoma County. C.A.P.P. has long term affects on our community as well as the children it assists. C.A.P.P. helps children stabilize outside of the Foster Care system. California's system is the worst and most overburdened system in the country. In 2002, it failed to pass all 6 Federal standards established to ensure children are kept safe. Every year, over 11,000 children are re-victimized after C.P.S. involvement and over 450 children are abused while in foster care. C.A.P.P. Serves 100 families and 150 abused children annually.

HOME – Homeless Advocacy Project

Read Client Story

HOME helps prevent hundreds of children and families from becoming homeless. It also ensures that low-income people have safe and habitable places to live. HOME helps tenants who are being unlawfully evicted assert defenses such as retaliation and discrimination. It helps families living with toxic mold, roach infestations, raw sewage and other conditions that threaten their health, assert their right to live in rental housing that does not make them sick. HOME aids over 200 families and over 400 individuals annually.
